SCA Committees

Your involvement is key to making our children’s school experience as fulfilling as possible!  Contact your Executive Committee or Committee Chair to get involved and volunteer for one or more of the following Committees & Events.


Accounting Review Committee

2 Representatives meet with SCA Treasurer and Co-Presidents twice in October and twice in April to conduct a bi-annual review of SCA accounts. (Committee)

After School SCA Clubs & Activities

GWL students participate in classes, after school, T-F, 2:45-3:45 p.m. Chairpersons and volunteers recruit teachers, arrange schedule and register students. (Program)

Back to School Barbecue

Event organizer is responsible for hiring vendors (eg: for food and inflatable’s) and coordinating with volunteers to organize fun activities and games for the Kick-off of the new school year. Volunteers are needed to lead the Kindergarten Parade, for sale of food tickets, sale of GWL spirit items, and also for set up and clean-up of event. Beautification Committee

Chairperson to coordinate beautification and maintenance efforts for the Front Entrance. Chairperson to coordinate beautification and maintenance efforts for the Library Terrace. (Project)

Book Fair Committee

GWL book sale for students, teachers and parents held during school hours and one evening.   Volunteers help students select and purchase books during the day or evening family hours of sale. Chairpersons work closely with the librarian and Scholastic books to coordinate the Fair. The proceeds of the sale are given back to the GWL children by offering the students a 20% discount on the books. (Fundraiser)

Box Tops Committee

Work with GWL Recreational Specialist to aid in purchasing items that GWL children would use during recess. The Recreation Committee promotes and coordinates the efforts of raising the funds to purchase the recess items by asking GWL families to clip and save “Box Tops for Education” from General Mills products and bring them to school for various raffles.(Fundraiser)

Citizens Awareness Committee

Representative educates the community about the budget and works closely with the SCA Board in communicating the aspects of the district school budget. Volunteers produce and distribute informational flyers to raise awareness to district for school budget vote.  (March through May) (Project)

Coordinating Council

Volunteers to represent GWL and discuss school-related topics at monthly district meetings. Meetings are held in the Alumni Room at North Shore High School. Meeting dates are noted on the district calendar. Representatives are required to provide reports to the SCA for monthly SCA meetings. (Project)

C.R.E.W. WEEK   (Curious Readers Enthusiastic Writers) 

Chairperson works closely with reading teachers to coordinate a schedule with class parents for parent volunteers visiting K-5 classes as guest readers during GWL’s reading and writing celebration.  Coordinate author visit.*Mostly can be done by emails.  (Project)

Cultural Arts/ Circus

Chairpersons work closely with faculty and other schools within the district to review and schedule Cultural Art Events for all grades, which enhance curriculum studies. (Project)

Decorating Committee 

GWL cafeteria is decorated with seasonal and student artwork.  Volunteers select themes and decorate the cafeteria monthly. (Project)

Dinner Dance

Chairpersons organize, plan and coordinate the dinner dance and volunteer efforts. This bi-annual event is typically the largest and most successful fundraiser for GWL. (Fundraiser)

Faculty and Staff Thank You Luncheon

Chairperson organizes food donations and volunteers to set-up and clean up at a luncheon in appreciation of faculty and staff. (Project)

Fall Fundraiser: Charleston Wrap, KidStuff Coupon Books

Chairperson and volunteers organize and coordinate the purchase, sale, and distribution of merchandise for fundraising purposes. (Fundraiser)

Family Fun Bowling Night

A fun-filled evening for GWL families and faculty! Volunteers needed to help organize event. October 25, 2013 (Project)

Field Day 

Volunteers distribute refreshments to GWL grades K-4 on Field day (June) from 8:30 am –12:30 pm. Chairperson coordinates the scheduling of volunteers and orders the refreshments.(Project)

Holiday Shopping Night

This one night event is a fun night out for families to shop for all of their holiday needs. Coordinate vendors, spirit wear, refreshments, flyers, raffles, and advertising. (Fundraiser)

Italian Ice Sales

Committee members notify and sell Italian Ices to students on Fridays in May and June at dismissal. (Fundraiser)

Kid Power Newspaper

Students, teachers and parents submit writing and artwork to Kid Power. Chairperson and volunteers schedule, collect, edit and publish each quarterly edition.(Program)

Halloween Parade 

Students participate in a costume parade.  Volunteers decorate the field (or auditorium, if rain) and provide music. Chairperson coordinates the decorating, music and photography for group photos. October 31 at 1:30 pm.(Project)

MixedBag

Chairperson and volunteers organize and coordinate the purchase, sale, and distribution of merchandise for fundraising purposes. (Fundraiser)

Nominating Committee

The nominating committee proposes candidates for the vacating offices of the SCA Board.  1-2 Meetings TBA in the spring.  The committee consists of eleven voting members.  Once the committee is formed, the committee members will be contacted and the first meeting will be scheduled.(Committee)

Nutrition Representative

Represents GWL at monthly Nutrition meetings at North Shore High School with other District representatives.  Representative is required to attend monthly SCA meetings and report when necessary. (Committee)

Raffles

Chairperson and committee members promote and collect names/$ for raffles: VIP Reserved Performance Seating, and Kindle Fire Raffle Drawings. (Fundraiser)

Safety, Health & Wellness Representative

GWL faculty and staff discuss and promote school and state safety, health and wellness issues. Representative attends scheduled district safety meeting and monthly SCA meetings. (Committee)

School Supply Committee 

Responsible for ordering school supplies (end of May/ early June)  including Agendas for grades 3, 4, and Homework folders for grades K, 1, & 2. Distribute flyer, collect orders and funds for the Back to School Supply boxes for distribution. When Supply Boxes arrive, 2 volunteers from each grade are to label and distribute the supply boxes to each class in their respective grade at the end of August/early September. (Fundraiser)

Science Fair

Spirit Committee

Chairperson and Volunteers coordinate the purchase, sale and distribution of GWL Spirit items.  6-10 various school and sporting events throughout the year plus maintaining order forms, flyers, and inventory.  Current Spirit items include GWL t-shirts, Sweatshirts, sweatpants, pullovers, and magnets, bag, water bottles and more.  (Fundraiser)

Talent Show

Chairpersons coordinate a production featuring the talents of GWL students. Chairpersons schedule rehearsals, preview acts and organize the volunteers. (Program)

Welcoming Committee/K Meet and Greet Committee

Volunteers provide information about SCA Committees, school events, and clubs, to new families to ease their transition.  Required to order refreshments for various events/meetings. Meet & Greet event for Kindergarten. (Project)

Year Book  Committee 

Chairpersons coordinate subcommittees to accomplish the following:  highlight the 5th grade graduating class, showcase all GWL classes, faculty, clubs and school events.  Volunteers from all grades are welcome to take photos, type, edit, arrange layout etc. (Project)
